Nuclear security experts are issuing urgent warnings about artificial intelligence integration into nuclear weapons systems, cautioning that automated decision-making could trigger catastrophic conflicts despite recent diplomatic pledges.
The warnings come as military AI capabilities advance rapidly, raising fears that the technology’s speed could undermine deliberative processes that have prevented nuclear war for decades.
“We’re at a dangerous crossroads,” said Dr. Rebecca Martinez, a nuclear policy researcher at the Carnegie Endowment. “AI systems respond in milliseconds, but nuclear decisions require careful human judgment that takes minutes or hours.”
